Campaign Tracking Done Right: From UTMs to Conversions

The Attribution Gap

Most marketing teams can tell you how many clicks their links received. Far fewer can tell you which specific campaign, channel, and creative drove a paying customer. This attribution gap is not a technology problem — it is a process problem. The tools exist; what is missing is a disciplined workflow that connects link creation to campaign structure to conversion tracking.

This guide walks you through an end-to-end campaign tracking workflow using MASK, from initial UTM setup to final conversion reporting.

Step 1: Define Your Campaign Structure

Before creating a single link, define the campaign in MASK. A campaign is a container that groups related links, applies consistent UTM parameters, and aggregates analytics. Start by answering these questions:

  • What is the campaign objective? Brand awareness, lead generation, product launch, event registration — the objective determines which metrics matter.

  • Which channels will you use? Email, social, paid search, partner referrals — each channel will have its own links with distinct UTM parameters.

  • What is the timeline? Set start and end dates so you can measure performance within a defined window.

  • Who is responsible? Assign campaign ownership within your MASK workspace so accountability is clear.

Step 2: Create Links with UTM Discipline

With your campaign defined, create links for each channel and content variation. MASK's campaign feature automatically applies your base UTM parameters — utm_source, utm_medium, and utm_campaign — to every link in the campaign. You only need to customize utm_content for individual variations:

  • utm_content=hero-banner for the main banner link in an email

  • utm_content=sidebar-cta for a sidebar call-to-action

  • utm_content=footer-link for a footer text link

This ensures consistent tagging across every link in the campaign while still allowing granular variation tracking. Every link is created as a branded short URL, so the complex UTM query strings are hidden behind a clean, trustworthy link.

Step 3: Distribute and Monitor

Once your links are live across channels, MASK's campaign dashboard gives you a unified view of performance. Unlike checking analytics link by link, the campaign view aggregates clicks, geographic data, device breakdowns, and referrer information across all links in the campaign.

Key metrics to monitor during the campaign:

  • Click velocity: How quickly are clicks accumulating? A strong launch that tapers off may indicate your audience saw the content but did not reshare.

  • Channel comparison: Which channels drive the most volume? Which have the highest click-to-conversion ratio?

  • Content performance: Are certain creative variations (tracked via utm_content) outperforming others? Double down on what works.

  • Geographic distribution: Is the campaign reaching your target markets, or is traffic skewing to unexpected regions?

Step 4: Connect Clicks to Conversions

Clicks are the beginning of the funnel, not the end. To close the attribution loop, connect MASK's click data with your conversion tracking:

  • Google Analytics integration: UTM parameters flow directly into GA4 traffic acquisition reports, allowing you to see which campaigns drive goal completions and e-commerce transactions.

  • Server-side conversions: Post conversions to MASK's /api/v1/conversions endpoint from your own server, and subscribe to conversion.created to mirror each one into your data warehouse together with the link, QR code or campaign it named.

  • CRM enrichment: For B2B campaigns, feed MASK click data into your CRM to attribute pipeline and revenue to specific links and campaigns.

Step 5: Report and Iterate

After the campaign concludes, pull a comprehensive report from MASK that includes total clicks, unique clicks, geographic breakdown, device split, top-performing links, and channel comparison. Compare against your initial objectives. Did the email channel outperform social? Did the hero banner CTA outperform the sidebar? Use these insights to inform your next campaign's budget allocation, creative strategy, and channel mix.

Campaign tracking is not a one-time setup — it is a discipline. Each campaign teaches you something about your audience, and that knowledge compounds over time. MASK's campaign management tools are designed to make this discipline easy to maintain, even as your team and link volume scale.
