An engagement rate divides the things people did to a post by the size of the audience you choose to measure it against. The first half is uncontroversial — likes, comments, shares and saves are counts the platforms publish. The second half is where the disagreement lives, and it is why two tools can report wildly different rates for the same post without either of them being wrong.

This calculator asks for all three denominators and reports every one you can supply, with the formula it used printed underneath. If you only know your follower count, you get that rate and the caveat that comes with it. If you have reach and impressions from your own analytics, you get the two rates that describe what the post actually did.

Questions

Which denominator is the correct one?
None of them, and that is the honest answer. There is no single cross-platform definition of an engagement rate, so a rate is only comparable to another rate computed the same way — same denominator, same platform, same kind of post, same period. Comparing a followers-based rate to a reach-based one tells you nothing about either post.
Does Instagram publish an engagement rate?
No. Instagram's own surfaces publish counts — likes, comments, shares, saves, reach, impressions — but no metric named engagement rate. Every Instagram engagement rate you have been quoted is something a third party built out of those counts, including the ones on this page. That is not a reason to avoid the number; it is a reason to say how you calculated it.
What about LinkedIn?
LinkedIn is the one platform here that does publish an engagement rate, and it describes it differently depending on where you look. Page analytics describes interactions — clicks, reactions, comments and shares — divided by impressions. Campaign Manager describes an ad engagement rate as clicks divided by impressions. So even quoting LinkedIn means naming which surface you mean.
What do TikTok and X define?
This tool does not say, because it could not be verified against what those platforms publish. Plenty of articles will state a formula for both with great confidence. If you need to quote one, take it from the platform's own documentation rather than from a calculator — this one included.
Why does the follower denominator exist if no platform backs it?
Because follower counts are the only one of the three numbers you can see from outside an account. Reach and impressions are visible only to whoever owns the account, so any tool that rates creators it does not have access to has to use followers. That is a constraint of the observer, not a statement about what the post did.
My rate is over 100%. Is that a bug?
No, and this tool will not cap it. Reach counts each account once, while interactions count each action, so one person who likes, comments and shares contributes three interactions and one unit of reach. A small post shared widely can genuinely land above 100% against reach. Clamping it to 100% would be a nicer-looking lie.
Do you show a benchmark for a good rate?
No. A benchmark quoted without its denominator, platform, post format and date is not something you can measure yourself against, and most circulating benchmarks come with none of those. Your own rate over time, computed the same way each time, is the comparison that actually holds.
